About me:
Hi! My name is Arleen Garcia and I am a senior at Newton North High School. Ever since I was little I knew I wanted to work with kids when I grew up and I wanted to make a difference. I spent my middle school summers at the Gardner Pilot Academy, my elementary school, volunteering until I was hired two years ago as a teacher assistant for K1 during the summer and for 4th grade during the year in their after school program. I considered being a teacher until I attempted teaching 4th graders about recycling and deciding teaching wasn't for me. It wasn't until my cousin started her nursing career that I realized nursing could be for me.
The summer of 2016 I interned at Boston Children's Hospital in their six week SCOOP internship and it was the best experience of my life. I was placed in the Emergency Department where I fell in love with the hospital setting, the staff, and the patients. It assured me that nursing was the path I wanted to take. During my time there I shadowed a friend in an oncology unit and realized that not only did I want to work with kids and make a difference, I want to do that for kids with cancer.
For my CAPStone Internship program I will be interning at the One Mission Resource Room at Boston Children's Hospital. One Mission is a pediatric cancer charity that does whatever it takes to get kids and their families through cancer. One Mission programs help bring joy and smiles during a fearful time by giving various types of support to the kids and their loved ones. I will be assisting putting on various weekend events, assisting the hematology/oncology nurses, and supporting the hematology/oncology patients.
